(明代帶劍腿北方栢木條案)This beautiful simple and long narrow An table (案)from the 16-17th century is possibly made of a special type of rare Northern Chinese cypress wood that is very dense with tight and delicate obvious growth wheels when viewed from the side cut (See one of the detail photos). The actual polished surface of the wood is incredibly smooth like that of silk to the eyes and to the touch with hardly any grain. The raw wood supposedly has a wonderful light fragrance. This long table is built with an elegant proportion with details finely executed. One proof would be its beautifully shaped legs with a carved arrow design towards the bottom. The top of the table is composed of a very thick single board with a subtly carved waist that is part of the one piece of wood that forms the top and the waist together. This type of structure was dated by Mr. Wang Shi Xiang (王世襄)in his book 明式家具研究, published in 2008 in Chinese, to be an earlier one than those made with a separate piece of wood for the waist of the table. The triangular pointed shape at the top of the table legs that fits into and holds both the table top and the spandrels (牙條)on the two sides of the legs has an “an sun, 暗榫, a secret joinery” behind, opposite to the triangular shape, one that one cannot see from the front, that is the essential primary structure that holds the whole table together. This type of joinery is called “cha-jian sun, 插肩榫). This table is a perfect example showing how the earlier furniture pieces were made with a structure that forms the design with no unnecessary additional parts added. This kind of minimal approach in contrary offers the most sophisticated and secured joinery and structure for the furniture to last for centuries and is the key for its timeless beauty in design. Chinese wood can be very difficult to verify. This piece, which was repaired at various spots with golden-thread-nan-mu (金絲楠木)wood caused more confusion in identifying the wood as some species of northern Bai wood carries similar grain like that of golden-thread-nan-mu, and in some cases, it also resembles some of the Yuangyangmu (黃楊木), yellow-box-wood, to some degree. This possibly early to mid Qing Dynasty northern antique Chinese coffer style cabinet is hand- painted with Daoist Eight Immortals on the four doors with nicely carved stylized dragons in a grayish dark blue color as the decoration for the wings, all painted in organic color pigments made of ground minerals, semi- precious stones, and vegetation. The elaborately carved floral patterns on the two drawers look to be similar to the ones from the Shanxi area. Each figure is painted on a panel recessed inside a frame work- a common construction for many of the northern cabinets. The metal fitting is iron rather than those made of brass on the southern and coastal furniture pieces. This one has been refinished in a light clear lacquer finish and is in excellent condition. Folk furniture piece like this one has its own charm in a way both naive and beautifully colored. Chinese home furnishing is a large category with huge variety in Chinese art and antique, showcasing different local areas where people lived with unique different cultures. This impressive and very rare seven feet long antique Chinese bamboo altar table is constructed and joined together with both the bamboo pegs and tied knots. The wrapping style bent joinery at each corner of the table is an interesting one that is similar to and possibly imitated by some of the Chinese wooden furniture pieces with the same style of the joinery, giving that the bamboo is limited in the ways it can form a bent corner. The waist area underneath the top panel also has the same type of construction as some of the wood furniture pieces. Old bamboo furniture is extremely rare as they don't last nearly as long as the wooden furniture pieces. Few of the antique bamboo furniture pieces can be found. This bamboo table is made of rare Xiang-Fei-Zhu bamboo (“Zhu” means bamboo) with the beautiful natural darker spots in different shades on the bamboo surface which show a beautiful iridescent result with the natural aged bamboo patina as the background. It is said to be as beautiful as tears from a famous Chinese beauty who was adored by the emperor but eventually was ordered to death by the emperor during the political turmoil. The word of “Xiang” also shares the same pronunciation as the word for “Hunan province” in northern China where this bamboo was also grown. Dimensions: 37 1/2"h x 83 5/8"w x 18 3/4"d
