    (清代核桃木理髮匠工具櫈) This is a 19th century barber’s tool chest and work bench made of both Chinese walnut hardwood and northern Chinese elm with rare original red color pigment made of organic precious ground mineral that is rarely seen on this type of work bench. This chest measures 17.5” in height which allowed the barber to cut the client’s hair at a comfortable height with the hands when a client sat at the bench. The small drawers at the front and the side stored scissors, combs, loose change, and other necessary items for performing the job and doing business. Sometimes some other similar pieces might have metal loops which allowed the chest/ bench to be tied and carried when traveling place to place for work. the bottom of this stool/ chest are carved on both sides with auspicious symbols such as pomegranate and floral design. A good part of Chinese woodwork was used to create life’s necessities, including utilitarian wares used as everyday objects as well as pieces for special needs, such as this one. This chest has some replacements in wood, nevertheless, it is quite beautiful and unique in its triangular form. It measures 22 ¼” long, 17 ½” high, and 10 ¼” deep with its tapered legs.

    (清中早期帶竹邊黑漆小書箱)This is a rare and older antique small traveling style northern Chinese manuscript storage chest that was used to store rice paper bound manuscripts. It is constructed on a higher base as one piece and has shelves & drawers inside. This chest, possibly from the early Qing, has the original old black lacquer & iron fitting at the edges of the chest at the top and the bottom. One or two of the hinges on the doors were replaced. This chest with an unusual proportion has bamboo trims on the two sides of the top which adds elegance to the piece and also suggests where this chest might have come from. The bamboo trims also prevent the strapping ropes from being cut off by the textured rough metal from the long journey as one can see that there are two metal loops on each of the two sides of the chest for strapping ropes when traveling. One can only imagine the stories accompanying this chest along the journey! Small narrow and tall chest like this one not only makes a great stand in modern day's decor, it is also an intimate personal companion in one's everyday life to enjoy.     Antique street vendor's tool chest with bellow and carrying bamboo handles. Such tool chest was used for selling food while moving from neighborhood to neighborhood. The compartments under the liftable door on top was for storing change such as coins. The tools such as a pair of stirrups, scissors, etc. would be stored in the drawer. A vendor would tie a small clay stove with coals in it and any other neccessary small equipments or dishes and bowls, etc. onto the top of the chest. The metal loop on the top is for hanging a small metal gong which the vendor used for alarming clients of his arrival. Upon hearing his gong, children, women, or older people will run out to buy the food from the vendor, usually something like pre-cooked tea eggs, fish cakes, fried crispy fermented tofu, baked sweet potato, etc. as each vendor had his own specialty. The stove and coals were used to keep the food warm while the bellow below was used for pumping more air to keep the coals burning. This rustic piece is in its unfinished original condition.
