Description
Antique Carved Architectural Panel with Rare Cat and Other Auspicious Symbols, including a Li-Mao cat perched and peeking over two sugar can stalks with a six-legged round stand holding a large pot of blooming orchids next to it. There is another planter with Bonsai rock further to the right. Two teapots, one with a high handle in the natural shape of a flower branch are also carved at the back of the cat, while a large auspicious pomegranate fruit with many seeds showing for prosperity and two water chestnuts are also carved towards the right. Such an array of natural objects together with the carving style suggest that this small wood palque might have come from Jiangsu/Zhejiang area where the woodworkers are highly praised for their intricacy and mastery of woodwork. The panel is carved in relieved style with all the surfaces of the subjects in a rounded shape that can be considered a type of Yuan-Diao (圆雕,Round or Rounded Carving). The frame is new. There is a crack at the bottom right of the panel that is not shown in this old photo. The carving is estimated to be 200-300 years old and is probably the inserted panel in the middle section of a tall antique Chinese screen door. As is.

Dimensions of the panel: 20 1/4" L x 9 1/8" W x 3/8" D
